Terms
Last updated October 25, 2026
By creating an account or playing Embergloam you agree to these Terms and to the Privacy Policy. Questions go to [email protected].
In short
This summary is here to help you read the Terms. It is not part of them, and the numbered sections below are what apply.
- You must be 13 or older. One person per account, and one character in the game at a time.
- Follow the game's rules. Staff can silence, suspend, ban or delete an account, with or without a warning.
- Your characters, coin and items are part of the game, not your property. They can change or be wiped, and they can't be sold for real money.
- What you write stays yours, and you let us show, store and moderate it to run the game.
- The game is free and comes with no warranty, and we aren't liable for what's lost in it.
1. The agreement
These Terms are an agreement between you and the people who run Embergloam ("we" and "us"). They cover the game, its website, its web client, its telnet service and its Discord server (together, "the Service"). The Privacy Policy and the game's rules (help rules in the game) are part of these Terms. Discord's own terms and rules also apply on our Discord server. If you don't agree to them, don't use the Service.
2. Who can play
You must be 13 or older to use the Service. If you are under 18, you may use it only if a parent or guardian has read these Terms and agrees to them for you. The Service is run from the United States and is not directed at residents of the European Union or the United Kingdom.
3. Your account
An account is for one person. Don't share it, sell it or give it away, and don't use anyone else's. You are responsible for everything done on your account, so keep your password to yourself. If you think someone else has used your account, write to [email protected] right away. An email on the account is the only way to recover a forgotten password or account name.
4. Your license to play
While you follow these Terms, we give you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable license to use the Service for your own entertainment, not for any commercial purpose.
The Service and everything in it, including its world, writing, art, sound and software, belong to us or to those who license them to us. Except as these Terms allow or the law permits, you may not copy, change, distribute, sell or reverse engineer any part of the Service, or run a server from it. Playing through a MUD client, with the triggers and aliases help rules allows, is fine. We keep every right these Terms don't give you.
5. Characters, coin and items
Characters, coin, items and everything else in the game are part of the license in section 4. You don't own them, and they have no value outside the game. You may not sell, buy or trade them for real money or anything else outside the game, or offer to.
We may change, rebalance, remove or reset any part of the game at any time, including wiping characters and their belongings while the game is being built. We owe nothing for anything lost this way, or for anything lost to a bug, an outage or the closing of an account.
6. How you use the Service
Follow the game's rules. Also, do not:
- attack, overload, probe or try to get into the Service's servers or other players' accounts;
- use bugs, automation or other software to gain an advantage, beyond what
help rulesallows; - collect, publish or share other players' personal information, or scrape the Service; or
- use the Service for anything unlawful.
A player who is bothering you can be reported with report <player>.
7. What you write
You keep ownership of what you write in the Service: the words you choose for names, descriptions, chat, tells, mail, reports and the like ("your content"). You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, copy, show, send and moderate your content as needed to run the Service. That includes showing chat to the players who can see it, showing OOC chat on our Discord server, and keeping moderation records. The license lasts as long as we need it for those purposes.
You promise you have the right to post your content and that it breaks no law or rule. We don't review everything players write and aren't responsible for it. We may remove any content, for any reason.
If you send us ideas, feedback or bug reports, we may use them however we like, without paying you or naming you. Staff may post them on our Discord server without your name.
8. Moderation and ending an account
We may warn, silence, suspend, ban or delete any account, or remove anything from the Service, at any time and for any reason, with or without notice. A breach of these Terms or of the game's rules is the usual reason. How to dispute a decision is in the rules.
You may stop playing at any time and delete your account with delete account on the character list. The second paragraph of section 4, and sections 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14, still apply after an account ends.
9. Copyright
If you believe something in the Service infringes your copyright, write to [email protected] saying what the work is, where it is in the Service and how to reach you, and we will look into it.
10. No warranty
THE SERVICE IS FREE AND PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE." TO THE FULLEST EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, WE MAKE NO WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DON'T PROMISE THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE AVAILABLE, SECURE OR FREE OF ERRORS, OR THAT ANYTHING IN IT WILL BE KEPT.
11. Limits on our liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF DATA, CHARACTERS, ITEMS OR PROFITS, THAT COME FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE OR YOUR INABILITY TO USE IT. Some places don't allow some of these limits, and there they apply only as far as the law allows.
12. Claims about your conduct
To the extent the law allows, you agree to cover us for any claims, losses and costs, including reasonable legal fees, that come from your breach of these Terms, your content, or how you use the Service.
13. Changes
We may change the Service, or end it, at any time. When these Terms change, the new version goes on this page with a new date, and a change that matters is announced in the game. Using the Service after a change means you accept the new Terms.
14. General
These Terms, with the Privacy Policy and the game's rules, are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service. If any part of them can't be enforced, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce a part of them, we haven't given up the right to. You can't transfer these Terms or your account to anyone. We may transfer them to whoever runs the Service after us.
